Doherty to replace injured Hauritz in ODIs against England

MELBOURNE: Tasmanian spinner Xavier Doherty was back in Australia's World Cup calculations on Saturday, just days after his state captain lambasted national selectors for casting him aside. Doherty was recalled to the Australian side for the third and fourth one-day internationals against England after fellow spinner Nathan Hauritz appeared to suffer a serious shoulder injury in Australia's 46-run win in Hobart on Friday. The 28-year-old Doherty played in the first match of the series last Sunday, his third ODI, but went wicketless and was subsequently left out of Australia's 15-man World Cup squad, named Tuesday. Hauritz was named in the World Cup squad at Doherty's expense and recalled for Friday's game, but his injury may open the door for the left-hander to be part of Australia's title defence when the World Cup starts next week. CHRISTCHURCH: A maiden century by Mohammad Hafeez and a blistering 65 by Shahid Afridi set up Pakistan for a 43-run win over New Zealand in their one-day cricket international on Saturday. Scorecard The batting heroics, which rescued Pakistan from a disastrous start, were complemented by the fielding exploits of Umar Akmal who featured in three crucial New Zealand dismissals. The result levelled the six-match series at 1-1, with one game washed out and three to play. It was a sharp turnaround in fortunes from the first match, which New Zealand won by nine wickets with more than 32 overs to spare. They showed the hallmarks of that domination in Christchurch when they won the toss, put Pakistan into bat on a green-tinged wicket, and had them two for eight by the fourth over. On the first Saturday in April, the final of the Cricket World Cup will be played in Mumbai.Given the evidence presented in Australia these past few days it is fanciful to suppose that England may be one of the teams taking part.
