Assam's international cricket umpire passes away

GUWAHATI: Assam's international cricket umpire and national level football referee Suren Ram Phookun passed away last night at a private hospital following protracted illness.

The 72-year-old Phookun, who had participated in the Queen's Baton relay here prior to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year, was admitted to hospital in a serious condition on Friday, his family said.

The only international cricket umpire of the North East region, Phookun was also the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association Umpires Committee and vice-chairman of the Sports Authority of Assam.

A social worker and a popular teacher, Phookun, was an eminent columnist and wrote on a wide range of topics besides sports.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi had on Tuesday given financial help of Rs 50,000 to the veteran cricket umpire for medical treatment.

Financial help was also given by local NGO 'Save Guwahati Build Guwahati', Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookun Udyan Samiti and the Assam Cricket Association.

Sports organisations mourned Phookun's death.
