The batting heroics of Woakes in his maiden England international in Adelaide may have surprised the cricketing world but not Giles, who has been impressed by the fresh-faced seamer since he took charge of Warwickshires playing affairs in September 2007.
I have long said that if I could clone one of my players it would be Chris Woakes, Giles said. Everything about him is impressive. He trains hard, he works hard on his fitness, hes receptive to new ideas and hes low maintenance. He just gets on with his job.
Hes a great character to have around and there is a lot more to come from him. Hes better known as a bowler at the moment but he has a future as a genuine all-rounder.
Hes already got a couple of first-class centuries for us and he scored a lot of important runs in one-day cricket last season.
The only thing that I was really surprised about today was that he was down at 11 in the order because we have seen him come in and win games for us by playing the sort of innings that he did in Adelaide.
