New Zealand 80-2 at lunch against Pakistan

WELLINGTON: Pace bowler Umar Gul took two wickets in the first hour to help Pakistan restrict New Zealand to 80-2 at lunch on Saturday's first day of the second Test at the Basin Reserve.

Scorecard

New Zealand, down 1-0 in the two-match series, won the toss and elected to bat but were soon in trouble when Gul trapped Brendon McCullum leg before wicket in the first over. Just before the drinks break, Gul had Kane Williamson caught behind by Adnan Akmal.

Opener Martin Guptill and vice-captain Ross Taylor ensured there was no further loss, both going to lunch unbeaten on 24.

McCullum shouldered arms to Gul's sixth ball of the day and was given out by Australian umpire Daryl Harper for two. The ball nipped back sharply off the seam and looked out, although television replays showed the ball was going over the top of middle stump.

New Zealand received better news in Gul's second over when Guptill, on five, was given not out by Harper when the technology showed he had edged behind to Akmal. There was a big gust of wind at the time which might have explained Harper's failure to pick up the noise.

Ironically, had the decision review system been in use, McCullum would have had his dismissal overturned and Guptill would have been back in the pavilion.

Gul had the assistance of a strong northerly wind and took 2-21, claiming Williamson's wicket for 21 with a lifting delivery outside off stump.

New Zealand made one change from the team that lost by 10 wickets in the first Test at Hamilton, with allrounder James Franklin replacing opener Tim McIntosh.

Pakistan went with the same 11 that beat New Zealand by 10 wickets inside three days at Hamilton.
